NASA's Astronomy Picture of the Day for October 2, 2026 featured a single composite image containing the entire Sharpless Catalog of H II regions, 313 objects, imaged over roughly 800 hours by astrophotographer Bing Xin. The project shows how a 1959 survey, narrowband filters and one person's persistence turned a decades-old reference list into a public window on star formation.
