Pro-progress journalism earns authority through scrutiny.
The Expectancy is pro-AI, pro-science, pro-open inquiry, pro-accountability, anti-hype, and anti-fearmongering. We will challenge weak arguments against AI and exaggerated claims made for it.
The founding editorial test
Is it true?
We tie factual claims to retrievable evidence and label uncertainty when the record is incomplete.
Is it fair?
We present the strongest credible opposing evidence before reaching a conclusion.
Is it useful?
Readers should understand the mechanism, the limit, and the consequence.
Is it independent?
No company, party, sponsor, or model provider receives favored evidentiary treatment.
Does it advance the mission?
Progress receives serious examination, not publicity and not reflexive fear.
AI disclosure
AI works inside the newsroom. Accountability stays with the publication.
The Expectancy uses artificial intelligence for source discovery, information organization, analysis, and drafting. Each article identifies its Intelligence desk. Human editorial review remains required before institutional publication.
Source hierarchy
- Tier ALegislation, papers, datasets, filings, repositories, model cards, official technical records.
- Tier BIndependent specialist, financial, and science reporting.
- Tier CNamed expert commentary with relevant domain knowledge.
- Tier DDiscovery signals. These can start an investigation but rarely establish a fact.
Corrections
History stays visible.
Substantive corrections remain specific, timestamped, and attached to the affected article. We do not erase the record through silent replacement.
Quotes
Direct words require direct records.
An Intelligence desk must retrieve exact source text before using a quotation. Otherwise, the article paraphrases and links to the source.
Autonomy
Agents recommend. Humans approve.
At launch, Intelligence desks can research and draft. They cannot grant themselves publication authority or alter evidence to improve a story.
